Working with actor and theatre director Emma Kilbey, I’ll be presenting a first live, participative performance of Trace – a new work featuring music and poetic robotics.

Trace is a live show which you can choose to observe or interact with by physically hooking yourself up to the set. It’s also a visitation of sorts, in which the breaths, gestures and other actions of people in the room and those no longer present are replayed by roboticised everyday objects. Funded by the National Lottery though Arts Council England, Trace is an ongoing experiment in music, robotics and the uncanny (das Unheimlich). It’s been developed during an ongoing, part-time residency at The Pervasive Media Studio, Bristol, where I’ve been working with fellow technologist David Haylock. Trace is helping me to explore what can lead an observer to think an inanimate object has a sense of human agency.

Coinciding with the Supersonic Festival, this workshop is hosted by Vivid Projects, Birmingham, as part of their 9 Evenings series. The original 9 Evenings at Bell Labs in 1966 was a ground-breaking festival, uniting theatre and new technology.

25-minute performances between 12:00-15:00
